About Diamond League
The Diamond League is a series of track and field competitions, held each year by the IAAF, the International Association of Athletics Federation. It began in 2010, replacing the previous Golden League, which was a purely European series of competitions - it was open to competitors around the world, but with the events only taking place in European locations. The Diamond League now includes events in Morocco, the United States, China and Qatar. Fans rush to buy sports tickets early to make sure they get to see each event.
Running from May to late August/early September each year, each individual event includes several races and contests, during which the contestants receive points for the position they finish in. Athletes with the most points at the end of the season qualify for the finals in Zurich and Brussels.
Previously, a different scoring system was used with points being given to the top three athletes only. Double points were on offer in the final two meetings of the season, and the athletes with the highest scores overall were named as the winners, noted as winning the Diamond Race. The new scoring system was implemented in 2017.
