About EFL CUP
It may be only the third-ranked competition in English football, many pundits, managers, and even supporters have all come out during recent years and publicly state it’s time to enjoy the glory of days gone by and listen to present voices, who all say the time has come for it to abound. But the EFL (Carabao) Cup is here to stay, still going on strong, and during recent seasons the tournament has re-established itself once more as one of the best shows English football has to offer.
Compared to other cup competitions around European football, the EFL Cup, known as the League Cup, or the Carabao Cup, is not a century-old competition. It was established only in 1960 and nowadays is entering its 61st season. Cup competition is open to clubs from England’s top four divisions – Premier League, Championship, League One, and Lague Two, 92 clubs in total.
The competition consists of seven rounds, while only the semi-finals are played in home and away format. Starting in 1967, excluding some lone seasons, the final match is played in Wembley Stadium and the cup holder gets an invitation to play in the newly created UEFA Europa Conference League.
So why attend the exciting matches of the EFL Cup? Well, because this is exactly what they are – exciting, full of fun, with top brand football. Due to overload, especially during the festive season, some clubs let under-23 players represent them and supporters have a wonderful opportunity to see the next generation.
Some clubs have written the EFL Cup into their record books such as Liverpool, whose win over Birmingham City in 2001 has led them to continue and create a season for the ages – the Trebble year – which also included winning the FA Cup and (then) the UEFA Cup.
Liverpool, together with Manchester City have registered the most EFL Cup wins, with 8 trophies, as City has won the last four in a row and is the current EFL Cupholder. In all, Liverpool has reached the finals a record 12 times. Liverpool’s Ian Rush holds the record for most goals scored in a career during cup competition with 49. Rush, together with Emile Heskey, Sergio Aguero, and Fernandinho hold the record for most final appearances with six. And a nice little trivia: in 2016, Derby County and Carlisle United have attempted no fewer than 32 penalties in a shout-out
