The European governing body of football, UEFA, run a competition for national under-21 teams every two years. Known as either the UEFA European Under 21 Championship or the UEFA Euro U-21s, the tournament has been held since 1978. Prior to this, a championship for players under the age of 23 was held from 1967.
To be eligible to compete, the players must be born in 1996 or later. As the qualification process for the 2019 finals began in 2015, some players may be up to 23 years old at the time of the final match.
The tournament is important in its own right, and is also used as a qualifier for the Summer Olympics. Match tickets are sometimes difficult to obtain due to the popularity of the tournament and the quality of the players – previous international youth team members include names such as Figo, Totti, Buffon, Pirlo, and Ozil, who are known as World Cup-winning players.
The number of teams and qualification groups has changed over the years, with the 2019 UEFA European Under 21 Championship being contested by 12 teams in the finals. From 2021, 16 teams will compete in the final stages of the tournament.
Since 1978, Italy has won the tournament 5 times and been runner-up twice, and is also the host of the 2019 edition of the tournament (along with San Marino). Spain has won 4 times, and Germany (2017 winners), England, Netherlands and Russia have all won twice. Yugoslavia, France, Sweden and the Czech Republic are the only other winners, each having won the tournament once.
