What a way to welcome the summer of 2025. Just as snow will dissapear, making way to the beautiful spring weather with temperatures climbing above freezing into somewhat cool breeze, 16 of the world's best ice hockey national teams, featuring the finest players in the world, will be competing in the IIHF World Championship, to be held in Stockholm and Herning, Denmark.
Of the 16 teams participating, Sweeden and Denmark had qualified as host nations, 12 teams – Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Norway, Slovakia, Switzerland and the United States - qualified after finishing as top 14 placement at the 2024 IIHF World Championship and two – Hungary and Slovenia – qualified after winning promotion at the 2024 IIHF World Championship Division I.
The tournament will be held between May 10-26 at two venues: 16,000-seat Avicii Arena in Stockholm and 15,000-seat Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning.
The 16 national teams have been divided into 2 groups:
Group A:
Austria, Canada, Finland, Sweeden, Slovakia, Latvia, France, Slovenia.
Group B:
Germany, Kazakhstan, United States, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Hungary .
After playing seven games each, the top four teams advance to the knockout stage, where the first ranked team from group A play the fourth ranked team from group B. Winners advance to the semi-finals.
Because the world championship is played parallel to the NHL's Stanley Cup playoff period, international players from the NHL become available only after their respective teams were eliminated from the playoff.
The first international ice hockey championship under the world's governing body, the International Ice Hockey Federation, waw held at the 1920 Antwerp Summer Olympic games and was won by Canada. Starting in the 1924 Winter Olympics and up to 1968, every winter Olympics has been recognized as world championship.
Up to date, Canada sits atop the gold-winning medals of the world championships, with a total of 28 wins. Second is Russia (and the former Soviet Union) with 27 wins. It is followed by Czech Republic (and the former Czechoslovakia) with 12, Sweden with 11, Finland and the United States with 2 each, while Great Britan and Slovakia have won the world championship 1 time each.
As far as individual honors go, the former Soviet Union players top the list, due to Soviet domination of the sport in the 60's, 70's and 80's: Vladislav Tretiak and Alexander Ragulin played on 10 gold-medalist teams, Alexander Maltsev and Vladimir Petrov won the championship 9 times, and four other players of those great Soviet teams have 8 hold medals each.
