About Nascar
The names of the drivers are legendary. The names of the race tracks are legendary no less. Same goes to the racing teams and car numbers, which usually goes with the drivers throughout their entire careers. For over 70 years, NASCAR Cup Series has ignited the imagination and the hunger of car racing fanatics.
From afar, it looks like regular, mass production cars. Only on closer look, one can make the difference. And other than the body, there is nothing smellier between NASCAR racing cars and the ones we drive down the road: The monster, powerful engines (cars can reach speed of over 300 Km/h), the chassis, the almost-empty interior (as a matter of fact, there is nothing that is not necessary inside racing cars in order to reduce weight) and, of course, the special tires.
A NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) Cup Series season includes 36 races, all of them in the United States. The first 26 races consist as the regular season and the last 10 are the playoff, to which only 16 drivers advance, based on number of wins during the regular season and points total according to number of laps drivers has led and their finish placements.
At the conclusion of NASCAR Cup Series, championships are being awarded to drivers, owners and car manufacturers. Currently there only three car manufacturers compete during the season – Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota. All cars are equipped with Goodyear tires.
NASCAR Cup Series was stablished in 1949 and over the years has operated under different names, due to commercial sponsorships.
NASCAR Cup Series track differ one from the other. All of them are paved today (opposed to dirt tracks in the past), but its length differs most of them are oval and some road courses. Among tracks, no doubt two stand above the rest, as they have gained legendary status, no less – or even more – than drivers and car makers: Daytona International Speedway, home of the Daytona 500, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500. Winning one of those races is as prestigious as winning the championship.
In all, there are 15 owner groups participating in NASCAR Cup series, each fielding two drivers, as well as few part-time owners.
Three drivers have won NASCAR Cup series a record 7 times each: Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson. Earnhardt's death in a car crash at the 2001 Daytona 500 sparked rigorous studies in order to better car safety. His son, Dale Earnhardt Jr., is a two-time Daytona 500 winner and a NASCAR Hall of Fame.
The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series champion is Ryan Blaney from Penske team.
