About WNBA
The WNBA is the abbreviated form of the name of the Women’s National Basketball Association. The league was created in 1996 as a counterpart to the NBA (the basketball league for men). There are 12 teams currently playing in the WNBA from around the USA.
Women basketball players do not normally receive the same media attention than their male counterparts attract, but WNBA games and the WNBA playoffs are just as exciting and competitive as anything the NBA can offer.
Players such as Candace Parker and Sue Bird certainly do attract a following among fans. Candace Parker was the first overall pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft and helped the Los Angeles Sparks team win their first championship in over a decade in 2016. She was also the first female player to dunk in an NCAA tournament game, and the second woman to dunk in a WNBA game. Standing 6 feet 4 inches tall, she uses every inch of her height to great effect.
Sue Bird is not quite so tall, standing at 5 feet 9 inches. She has however won three WNBA Championships with Seattle Storm (2004, 2010, 2018), five Euroleague championships and four Olympic gold medals (2004-2016). Rightfully recognized as one of the greatest players of all time, she is a fantastic ambassador for women basketball players and the WNBA in general.
The 2020 WNBA season starts with some changes to the rules and regulations behind the scenes, offering better conditions for the players. Further, in addition to the matches played during the regular season, a cup tournament was also announced. The Commissioner’s Cup will have each team play 10 cup games during the season, with the final set of games being played in July. The top cup teams from each conference in the WNBA will meet in the cup final in August.
The regular season of WNBA games begins in May, and the WNBA Playoffs usually start in late September. There are slight variations to the calendar in years that feature the Olympics or the FIBA World Cup.
The WNBA Playoffs take the top 8 teams overall, irrespective of the conference, and place them into a tournament. The final two teams compete in the WNBA Finals, which are the best of five series.
The WNBA provides the greatest women basketball matches all seasons long, so make sure to get your sports tickets online early and don’t miss a moment of your favorite teams.
