About Arctic Monkeys
What is it in the city of Shefield in South Yorkshire, that so many musicians and bands came out of? Is it something that dates back to the Industrial Revolution of late 19th century? Or it has to do with the way hard-nosed, working-class people earn their living, working countless hours in dirty factories, finding their escape in music?
Well, Shefield has since cleaned up its act, closing many of its factories and becoming a symbol of a green-clean act friendly city. So, might it have something to do with Shefield being the first UK city to be named City of Culture? But that event took place in 2010 and musicians came out of the city much, much earlier.
The list, it seems, go on and on: Joe Cocker did his magic starting in the 60's. After him came Def Leppard, Paul Carrack (of Ace and Mike and the Mechanics), The Human League, Thompson Twins, ABC and so on.
As a new millennium started and in came past punk, indie band (later to become a hard rock band) Arctic Monkeys. From Shefield, mind you. Four friends and neighbors, who went to school together, started playing music. They took the long way, playing some small gigs and building a local, loyal fans base in Northern England. They waited almost three years but apparently it was worth it: Their first two singles, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and "When the Sun Goes Down", both released in 2005, debuted as no. 1 in the British charts. The band's first album, released later that year, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" became the fastest selling debut album in UK ever.
Ever since, Arctic Monkeys have released six more studio albums and went on a few world tours, In the words of British music writers, the band has become the UK's most important band of the last 20 years, making a significant change to the ways music is being published and distributed.
Up to date, the band has won 7 Brit Awards, 1 MOJO Award and 20 NME Awards. Amazingly enough, Arctic Monkeys were nominated few times for the Grammy and MTV Music Awards, but have never won it.
As of April 2023, Arctic Monkeys will embark on a monstrous world tour, that will see them playing on stages all over Europe, North America and Mexico until October. And shows are selling out rapidly.
