About Australia
It is probably one of the fiercest rivalries in the world of sports, likely the biggest of them all in the world of rugby: The Australia Wallabies Vs. the New Zealand All Blacks. And the one they call the greatest game of all time took place in 2000, in front of 11,000 spectators (a world record for a match of rugby), none of them will probably ever forget it. Over the years, those two teams have played some memorable matches between them, but none of them reached the heights of that single one match.
The one which was, and still is being described as the greatest match of rugby ever played took place during the first Bledsoe Cup Test in Sydney. The All Blacks went up 24-0 after just 10 minutes. Incredibly, the Australians leveled the score by half-time. And it continued to go back and forth during the second half, with the wallabies leading 35-34 toward the end, when, in the final play, the greatest player of all time, Jonah Lomu, scored and gave New Zealand a 39-35 victory.
Another match, another victory by death, this time for the Aussies, 29-26 in 2001, in what was the great John Eale’s last match, and the Wallabie great certainly enjoyed it, telling scorer Totai Kefu that he should buy him beers for the rest of his life.
Another memorable match happened during the same stage, in 1996, this time in Wellington, where the All Blacks crashed the Wallabies 43-6, the best all-around performance by any of the two teams during wet weather.
And the list goes on and on.
The Australia Rugby Union was formed in 1949 (50 years after an Australian national team first played) and serves as the governing body for the sport, that consists of eight unions representing states and territories and the 10 national teams.
39 of the national team players have been indicted over the years into the Australian Rugby Hall of Fame, more than 10 of them into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.
By international standards, Australia usually plays second fiddle for New Zealand. The country has won 3 Tri Nations Cups between 1996-2011, comparing to New Zealand’s 10, and 1 Rugby Championship since 2012 and on, comparing to New Zealand’s 5.
The 1990’s were the finest hour for the Wallabies. The yellow and green won two World Cup (1991, 1999) and twice came up as runner-up (2003, 2013) since play started in 1987. The team’s record in World Cup play stands at 39 wins out of 48 matches. Australia has a winning record percentage against all of the world’s leading rugby national teams. It’s lowest winning percentage is against Great Brittan – 52.55%.
Australia’s most capped player is George Gregan who has registered 139 matches. The country’s top scorer is Michael Lynagh with 911 points.
Australia play its home matches in 82,500 seat Stadium Australia.
