The irony is there. In 2017-18, the same season that Swansea City AFC lost its place in the Premier League and was relegated to the Championship, its cross-state rivals Cardiff City FC was promoted. Only 40 Km separate the two, but we will have to wait, and hope, at least one more season for the return of the South Wales derby.
The list of former Cardiff notable players is not long. Well, mostly, the name wouldn’t mean a thing to people outside of Wales. However, few names do stick out: Arsenal star and Wales international Aaron Ramsey started his career in Cardiff, making 16 appearances and scoring one goal between 2006-2008 before being Arsenal came calling. He later returned to Wales on a loan but has since established himself as a regular in North London Cardiff-born Craig Bellamy played for a host of clubs, finally joining Cardiff City on a loan from Manchester City for the 2011-2012 season, where he scored 11 goals. A year later, he returned to Liverpool for a second spell, and helped the club win the Football League Cup with a win over Cardiff. He returned to Wales who played in the Championship, and helped the club get a first promotion since 1962 to the Premier League in 2012-13, and closed out his career a season later, as Cardiff was relegated Former Liverpool great John Toshack began his career in Cardif, scoring 74 goals in 162 appearances between 1965-1970, before moving to fame and trophies in Liverpool. Ironically, Toshack finished his career with Swansea between 1978-1984 Then there was John Charles, perhaps the greatest Welsh player of all times, arrived in Cardiff in 1963 and played for the club for 3 seasons, after playing for Leeds United and Juventus, for whom he scored a lot of gals, as well as for Roma. And there were others, of course, still being adored on the southern coast of Wales.
Cardiff City was founded in 1899. In 1920, the club was accepted into the Football League. The club spent many of its seasons in the lower divisions. Things began to change in the early 2000, as foreign money poured in, first from Sam Hammam and later on from a Malaysian businessman, who got in a long and heated dispute with the fans, after his intention to change the colors of the uniform from the traditional blue to red, as well as his desire to change club’s logo, causing a lot of resistance and commotion. Things got quiet only after the foreign owners agreed to a return to the original roots.
Cardiff’s all-time goal scorer leader is Len Davies, who scored 181 goals between 1920-1931. The club’s appearance leader is Phil Dwyer, who recorded 471 matches between 1972-1985.
