About Chievo Verona
Chievo play in the eternal city of Verona, forever the city of Romeo and Juliet. Aside from that fact, it wouldn’t really be part of reality to connect the Flying Donkies of A.C. Chievo Verona with ancient Roman remains that still decorate the beautiful Northern Italian city, where red tile roofs are a common sight.
Chievo Verona is a relatively late introduction to Italian calcio, as the team was established only in 1929 by some football supporters. It was in the small neighborhood of Chievo (population only 4,500 residents) and hence its name. It took the club three years until it was able to make its professional day view in an Italian official league. As for such a small club, representing just a tiny neighborhood, Chievo is not supposed to be competing in the Serie A, not at all considering playing in Europe. But its fans have marked V for both items.
It wasn’t until mid-70’s that Chievo started its rapid climb. Rapid, that is, through Italy’s amateur leagues, all the way to the Forth Division and in 1986 it reached Serie C. In early 90’s the team, then under the name of Paluani Chievo - out of respect to former team chairman – changed its name to A.C. Chievo Verona. The team’s climb through the leagues gave birth to its nickname of “Flying Donkeys”. The name originated out of protest aimed at cross rivals Hellas Verona, whose chants included a certain phrase toward Chievo’s supporters – you will only get promoted when donkeys will be flying. Well, they did. And then came another league. And another. And the name stuck.
By 2001-02, Chievo did the absolute unthinkable and reached Serie A. That was big boys’ land, the place they could only dream of in the neighborhood a few years back. Since it was a fairytale story, Chievo not only got itself promoted to Serie A, but also felt quite comfortable there, thank you very much. And not only this, but the team dared to play without fears during league matches, leading the Serie A – The Serie A!!! – for some weeks, before finishing its first season in 5th place.
And the story didn’t end there. By finishing so high up the table, Chievo got itself right into the UEFA Cup. It did loose in the first round to Red Star Belgrade, but no complains were made. Well, maybe from Hellas Verona supporters.
Five years later it got even better. Because of the scandal that rocked Italian football, several leading teams were banned from European competition. And Chievo, that little team from a small neighborhood, was next in line. The Flying donkeys qualified for UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds but lost to Bulgarian side Levski Sofia. Win or lose, those donkeys were flying high.
Over the years, some notable players have worn the yellow and blue uniform. Among them is American striker Michael Bradley, Dutch midfielder Jonathan de Guzman, Brazilian forward Amauri (17 goals in 3 seasons), German striker Oliver Bierhoff (during his last season of playing) and Italians Simone Pepe, Stefano Fiore and Andrea Barzagli, before he went to achieve fame and trophies with Juventus.
Chievo share 39,371-seat Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi with cross rivals Hellas Verona.
