About Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos, an American football team based in Denver, Colorado are the prime example of a team that has transformed itself over the years. Their first season was in 1960 as members of the then American Football League, joining the NFL (National Football League) as part of the 1970 merger. The name “Broncos” was the result of a fan contest held in 1960 by the original AFL team. Their opening AFL decade followed by the first seven years in the American Football Conference west division were barren in terms of end of season and post season results and they did not complete a winning season until 1973.
Then came the transformation. Four years later, in 1977, they qualified for the playoffs for the first time in franchise history and advanced to Super Bowl XII. Since 1975, the Broncos have become one of the NFL's more successful teams, having suffered only six losing records in 40 seasons. They have won eight AFC Championships, three Super Bowl championships, and share the record for most Super Bowl appearances with the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Furthermore they have four players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Their three Super Bowl wins were in 1997 and 1998 and most recently in 2015. In 1997 the Broncos ended a run of four previous Super Bowl losses and also became the first AFC team to win in fifteen years when they defeated the Green Bay Packers 31-24. Their opponents the following year were the Atlanta Falcons who were making their first Super Bowl appearance and this time the margin of victory was 34-19. Their most recent win was the 50th Golden Anniversary Super Bowl against the Carolina Panthers. The Broncos took an early lead and never lost it, running out victors with a 24-10 margin.
John Elway spent his entire professional career with the Broncos and is now their General Manager. Elway recorded the most victories by a starting quarterback and statistically was the second most prolific passer in NFL history. He was also a prolific rusher of the ball, being one of only two players ever to score a rushing touchdown in four different Super Bowls and the only quarterback to do so.
Injury prevented Terrell Davis from being the greatest half back of all time. In 1997 he ran for 1,750 rushing yards and 15 TDs and carried the Broncos to the greatest Super Bowl of all time, where he won Super Bowl MVP despite having a migraine!
Randy Gradishar played for the Broncos from 1974-1983, a ferocious tackler and the greatest Bronco line-backer of all time.
Karl Mecklenburg was the best pass rusher in Bronco history and an enormously strong player. At his best, no defense could cope with him.
