About Girona FC
OK, so you’re not Barcelona, nor will you ever will be. You are just another football team from the city of Barcelona. After all, it’s not that bad to be the second team in Barcelona, isn’t it? But no, you are not the second, but rather the third team of the city, behind Barcelona and Espanol.
But maybe something is about to change for Girona FC. In 2017, the parent company of Manchester City - City Football Group, headed by Sheikh Mansour of the United Arab Emirates, one of the wealthiest people there is – bought almost one half of the Spanish side’s stakes. And to make things even more interesting, Girona’s ownership was bought by a group that consists of City Football Group in association with Girona Football Group, a group owned by Pere Guardiola, who is the brother of City’s manager Pep Guardiola.
That was welcoming news for Girona, who was promoted to Spain’s Primera Division for the first time it’s history. What will happen from now on is anybody’s guess, but Sheikh Mansour is not known for buying football clubs just for the sake of it.
Girona FC was founded very late in comparison to other football clubs in Spain upper divisions, only in 1930, and immediately was inserted in the Segunda Division. In later years following Spain’s Civil War, Girona has known some hard times, falling down the packing order into lower divisions, but it has managed to bounce back.
In 2010, after some harsh economic times, majority of the club’s shares were bought by a number of local businessmen and stability has set in. Later on, the new owners went on a campaign to sell and distribute club’s shares, in order to raise capita and fans’ involvement and interest in the team.
The happiest time in Girona’s history happened after the 2016-17 season. After several years of advancing to the play offs but failing to gain promotion, Girona finished as runners-up to Levante and gained automatic promotion to Primera Segunda for the first time in its history.
As a proud team from the region of Catalonia, Girona’s web site contains entries in Spanish and in Catalan.
