With so much American sport dominated by big business and big bucks, the enormous success enjoyed by the football team Green Bay Packers from Green Bay, Wisconsin is heartening. The Packers have the unique distinction of being the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team based in the United States. Playing in the National Football League (NFL) as members of the league's North division of the National Football Conference (NFC), Green Bay dates right back to 1919 and as such are the third-oldest franchise in the NFL.
Go back nearly a century and teams like the Packers, essentially small town teams, were commonplace. The Packers were founded in 1919 but they can trace their “ancestry” to several semi-pro teams in Green Bay from more than twenty years earlier. Green Bay has the challenge of being by far the smallest professional sports market in North America but has a wide fan and media base to work with.
Despite not being a “big city team” the Packers have an amazing success story to tell. No team has won as many league championships, the 13 being most in NFL history, with nine NFL titles before the Super Bowl era and four Super Bowl victories. The Packers are long-standing adversaries of all of their fellow members including the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, who together comprise the NFL's NFC North division. The rivalry with the Chicago team dates back to 1921.
The story of their four Super Bowl triumphs start with the very first Super Bowl in 1967 when the Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10. They repeated their win a year later this time over the Oakland Raiders with a 33-14 margin. It was nineteen years before their next victory, over the New England Patriots (35-21) and most recently with a much tighter 31-25 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers by a 31-25 margin.
Among the names who have been prominent for the Packers over their long history, we must include Brett Favre, Quarterback, 1992-2007 who spent the majority of his playing years with the Packers. Favre was the first quarterback in NFL history to pass for 500 touchdowns, throw for over 70,000 yards, over 6,000 completions, and over 10,000 pass attempts.
Ray Nitschke, Middle Linebacker, 1958-1972. One fan has suggested there has never been a better defensive player in the history of the Green Bay Packers’ organization. Blessed with good size (6’3,’’ 235), Nitschke possessed the ideal speed, smarts, and cutthroat tenacity to thrive as a middle linebacker.
At the time of his retirement, after just 11 seasons, Don Hutson held 18 NFL records, including the record for touchdowns caught, which would stand for four-and-a-half decades. Twice Hutson took home the NFL MVP award, a feat unthinkable for a receiver today.
The secret of Quarterback Bart Starr’s greatness lies in his wins. Six division titles. Three NFL Championships. The first two Super Bowls ever. Sure, Starr was surrounded by an unusual cast of talent that makes those things easier. But Bart Starr was the leader of those teams.
Running back Jim Taylor remains the franchise’s all-time leader in carries, career touchdowns, and single-season scores. Partnered with fellow running back Paul Hornung they formed arguably the most dynamic two-headed backfield in NFL history.
Guard Jerry Kramer was the best offensive lineman in franchise history – showing himself to be a man of athleticism and vitality. Statistics don’t show his importance to the team.
