About Japan
Almost one hundred years after the birth of Japan Rugby Football Union, Japan’s national team, as host of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, will face Romania in the tournament’s opener and maybe there is no better place to tell the story of a disaster, survival, recovery and rugby than the city of Kamaishi.
Kamaishi, a steelmaking city, was devastated by the big earthquake and tsunami that rocked the east part of the country in 2011. Not only did the city suffered massive destruction to infrastructure, but over 1,000 lives were lost. The city has entered and won the bid to be one of the host cities for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and decided to build a new stadium. The ground breaking for the 16,187-seat   Kamaishi Recovery Memorial Stadium was held in April 2017. The stadium is being built on the site where there were once schools, all destroyed in the tsunami.
Rugby is being played in Japan for over a century, and the Japan Rugby Football Union was established in 1926, as a result of a merger between the Kanto Rugby Football Union and the Seibu Rugby Football Union, running the game in eastern and western Japan.
Traditionally, Japan is the strongest rugby nation in Asia. The country has won the Asian Rugby Championship for a record 23 times out of 28 tournaments since 1969. The five times it didn’t win, Japan finished as runner-up. The country had less success in the Pacific Nations Cup, winning the tournament only twice in 10 tries since 2006. Japan has participated in the Rugby World Cup since its inception in 1987 but has never advanced beyond the pool stage.
In 2003, in an effort to drive competition higher, Japan has created the Top League, consists of 16 teams, all owned by factories who employ many of the players. In order to protect Japanese players, only three foreign players are allowed on the field at the same time. Among the foreign players who have played in the Top League, the most notable ones came from power houses New Zealand, Australia, Samoa and South Africa.
In addition to 2019 Rugby World Cup, Japan will also host the 2020 Summer Olympics, which means two of the globe’s most iconic international tournaments will be held in the country of the rising sun in a matter of a year. An outstanding celebration is guaranteed.
