About Levante UD
For a relatively small club, not even the leading club in its own home town, a club that has spent most of its one hundred plus year of existence in the lower league of Spain, trying to find its way up, a respected list of former players has worn the red and blue uniform of Levante UD.
Properly so, we’ll start with the Maestro. Johan Cruyff – yes, that JOHAN CRUYFF - played for Levante in 1981, after his so-called retainment from football, when the Barcelona chapter was over and Cruyff returned, first with then American clubs Los Angeles Aztecs and Washington Diplomates, and then he moved to west coast of Spain, to the city of Valencia, but not to that Valencia. Levante was founded in 1909, ten years before city rivals Valencia. In 1939, after the Spanish Civil War, Levante merged with another local club by the name of Gimnástico Football Club and there the name Unión Deportiva Levante-Gimnástic, who was later shortened to .Levante Unión Deportiva.
The club spent most of its years in Spain’s lower divisions, getting promoted for the first time to La Liga’s Primera Division in 1963-64. It lasted another season there, before being relegated. Next promotion occurred only in 2004-05, then another relegation. From 2010-11 (excluding one season), Levante is a permanent member of the First Division.
Levante UD play its home matches in Estadi Ciutat de Valencia, with a capacity of 26,354 seats.
