About Lille LOSC
The club is not owned by a wealthy businessman
such as Paris Saint Germain. It does not have a rich sporting tradition as
Marseille. It is not located in a posh, inviting location such as Monaco, nor
can the city in which it operates boosts a reputation as being the world's
premier industry, such as wine to Bordeaux. All Lille OSC can be proud of is being
a product of a merger between two teams who were both founders of the French
Division 1, and after decades of financial hardships, the club has found a
proper management team that enable it to compete at the upper echelon of French
football, as well as regularly play European competition.
Lille OSC was founded after World War II, when
two local clubs, Olympique Lillois and Sporting Club Flvois, decided to merge,
hence the new club's full name – Lille Olympique Sporting Club (LOSC). The new
club wasted little time and success came knocking in winning Ligue 1 championship
in the 1945-6 season. It did even better in cup competition (Coupe de France),
winning the French Cup in three successive seasons, during the 1945-1947
seasons. A second championship followed in 1953-54, but this time around, the
title signaled the beginning of a downward spiral and the club was first
relegated to Division 2 in 1956.
Hard times followed. The club didn't have
financial resources to fall back on, and attendance wasn't skyrocketing either.
For the next four decades, Lille shuffled back and forth between the 1st
and 2nd divisions, with little success to show for it.
In 1980 Lille became the first French football
club to achieve the status of a Mixed Economy Company, which results in a
mixture of a pragmatic division of means of production between private and
public ownership. The move, in which the city of Lille became the major
shareholder of the club, probably saved the club from caving under. It
certainly became a major source of stabilization. The club was relegated again
in 1997 (its last time in Division 2), but was promoted for the 2000-01 season,
the first season in which the French Football League was privatized.
The recovery was complete. In its first season
in Ligue 1, Lille, under coach Claude Puel (who coached Lille for eight
season), qualified for the Champions League and has been a regular in European
competition ever since. The club moved
to 18,154 seat Stadium Lille Metropole, only to vacate it in 2012 and move to
the new, 50,000 seat Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
In between came Lille's finest hour – the
league and the cup in the 2010-11 season. Under coach Rudi Garcia, Lille won 21
matches, finished the season 6 points above Marseille and featured such players
as Mossa Sow (Ligue 1 top goal scorer with 25 goals), Gervinho (16 goals, 9
assists), a young Eden Hazard (9 assists) and Yohan Cabaye (7 assists). Hazard can
be seen as a symbol to the transformation the club went through over the years.
The Belgium native joined Lille's youth sports school at an early age and came
through the ranks. His talents and ability were evident and several clubs
across Europe showed interest prior to him even becoming a regular in the 1st
team. But the No. 10 chose to stay an extra year even after winning the double
in 2011. Only then did he part ways with Lille for the fame and fortune of
living in North London and playing for Chelsea.
The red and blue's most caped player is
Marceau Somerlinck with 428 appearances, the top goal scorer is Jean Baratte
with 218 goals.
