About Malaga CF
Malaga Club de Futbol is a Spanish football club which was founded in 1904 and currently plays in the Segunda Division, the second tier of Spanish football.
The club plays its football at La Rosaleda stadium in Malaga which has a capacity of 30,000 spectators.
The club won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2002 and made it to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2003 as well as the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
The club’s big derby match is known as the Derby of Eastern Andalusia and is played against rivals Granada. Since the clubs first met in 1933, Granada have edged the derby with 29 wins to Malaga’s 25.
In 2010 the club was taken over by Qatari investors, who had ambitions of turning the club into Spanish giants. Malaga recruited well, signing players like Ruud van Nistelrooy, Jeremy Toulalan, Santi Cazorla and Julio Baptista. The club made inroads in La Liga and even qualified for the 2012-13 Champions League.
Malaga’s La Liga success was, however, short lived. Malaga couldn’t to hang on to their record-signing Santi Cazorla, who was sold to Arsenal. The club was subsequently hit with severe financial troubles, which resulted in a ban from all European competitions for one season.
In order for the club to pay its growing debts Malaga resorted to selling many of their star players, including their new signings. Playmaker Isco was sold to Real Madrid for a club record fee. In 2013, manager Manuel Pellegrini left the club to join Manchester City, taking with him Argentine defender Martin Demichelis.
The club is now in a recovery phase and looking to retain their La Liga status. Malaga is managed by former Real Madrid manager Bernd Schuster and captained by Brazilian defender Weligton. Malaga have managed to hang on to some of their key players despite the European ban, such as midfielder Ignacio Camacho, Paraguayan forward Roque Santa Cruz and defender Jesus Gamez.
