About Miami Marlins
The Miami Marlins play professional baseball in Miami, Florida as a member club of the National League (NL) East division. Their home park is Marlins Park. They hold the unusual distinction of being one of only two MLB franchises to have never won a division title but nonetheless have chalked up two World Series championships as a Wild Card.
The team began play in the 1993 season as the Florida Marlins. They played home games from their inaugural season to the 2011 season at Sun Life Stadium but since the 2012 season, they have played at Marlins Park in downtown Miami, on the site of the former Orange Bowl in Little Havana, Florida. Unlike its predecessor, the new stadium was designed principally as a baseball park. In 2011 the team name was changed to its current Miami Marlins.
The Marlins have the distinction of winning a World Series championship in both seasons they qualified for the postseason, doing so in 1997 and 2003 — both times as the National League wild card team.
In 1997 the Marlins set a record by reaching the World Series in only their fifth season. They were regarded as underdogs yet they crowned a stunning season. They defeated the Indians by four games to three to win their first World Series championship, making them the first wild card team to ever win the World Series. The final of Game 7 was decided in extra innings on an Edgar Rentería single. This was also the third (and most recent) time where Game 7 of the World Series went into an extra innings.
The Marlins were again the underdogs in 2003 when they defeated the heavily favored New York Yankees in six games with a score of 4–2. This is the most recent series in which the losing team outscored the winning team. The Yankees lost, despite outscoring the Marlins 21–17 in the Series.
Among the top players who have represented the Marlins since their inception is Hedley Ramirez who played for them for six seasons between 2006 and 2012. Some thought him to be the greatest Marlin ever. He became the second Marlin ever to win the National League Rookie of the Year award).
Pitcher Josh Beckett played a crucial role in victory over the Yankees in 2003. With the Marlins up 3-2 in the series, he pitched on just three days rest leading them to their second World Series title in franchise history.
Miguel Cabrera instantly became a firm favorite with the fans from the moment he stepped on the field. In his Major League debut at twenty years old, he hit a walk off homerun. He also figured strongly in getting the Marlins to the playoffs in 2003.
