About Minnesota Twins
The Minnesota Twins based in Minneapolis, Minnesota are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team playing in the Central Division of the American League. The team is named after the Twin Cities area comprising Minneapolis and St. Paul and have played at the Target Field stadium since April 2010.
The team was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1901 as one of the eight original teams of the American League, named the Washington Senators or Washington Nationals. Although the Washington team endured long bouts of mediocrity (immortalized in the 1955 Broadway musical Damn Yankees they had a period of prolonged success in the 1920s and 1930s.
In 1960, Major League Baseball granted the city of Minneapolis an expansion team. Washington owner Calvin Griffith requested that he be allowed to move his team to Minneapolis and instead give Washington the expansion team. Upon league approval, the team moved to Minnesota after the 1960 season.
As of now, the franchise has won three World Series championships (1924, 1987, and 1991), and has fielded 18 American League batting champions. The first of these victories, the only one won during the Washington years, saw a 4-3 series win over the New York Giants. The victory in the twelfth inning of the “winner-takes-all” game of the series is one of the two longest final games in World Series history.
In 1987 the victory against the St Louis Cardinals had some unusual features. Every match was won by the team playing in their home stadium and this was the first to include play in an indoor arena. Moreover the Twins reached the final having had a very poor season.
The most recent World Series victory, in 1991, saw the Minnesota Twins pull off a hard fought victory over the Atlanta Braves of the National League. The Minnesota Twins won in seven games with five games being decided by a single run, four games decided in the final at-bat and three games going into extra innings.
Kirby Puckett played his entire career with the Minnesota Twins. He was the heart and soul of both the 1987 and 1991 World Series Championship teams. Puckett was a .318 career hitter with 2304 hits, 207 home runs, and 1085 runs batted in.
Harmon Killebrew is the franchise leader for the Twins in games played, total bases, home runs, runs batted in, walks, sacrifice flies, and intentional walks. He is also the single-season leader in home runs and runs batted in.
Tony Oliva spent his entire 15 year career in Minnesota. He was an eight-time All-Star, won one Gold Glove award, AL Rookie of the Year in 1964 and received votes for the AL MVP eight times.
Kent Hrbek also played his entire career with the Minnesota Twins. A native of Minnesota, he was also a member of both the 1987 and 1991 World Series Championship teams. Hrbek was a consistent power hitter for the Twins, hitting 20 or more home runs in 10 of his 14 big league seasons.
