About RSC Anderlecht
R.S.C. Anderlecht is the club who holds most records in Belgium’s top football division – the Jupiler Pro League. The club was founded in 1908 under the name Sporting Club Anderlechtois in the Anderlecht suburb of Brussels. In 1933, At the 25th anniversary to its formation, the club changed its name to R.S. C. (Royal Sporting Club) Anderlechtois.
Previous to the name change, in 1917, Anderlecht moved to Constant Vanden Stock Stadium, a 28,063-seat football venue, it’s home ground ever since. During many local season, the club has set the highest attendance average in Belgium football.
First championship was won in the 1946-47 season, and Anderlecht has won a Belgium record 34 titles ever since. Those goes together with 9 Belgium Cups, 1 Belgium League Cup, 13 Belgium Super Cups, 2 UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup, 1 UEFA Cup and 2 UEFA Super Cups. As Belgium’s top club, Anderlecht has had more than its share of Champions League action.
Anderlechet’s biggest local rivalries are with Club Brugge and Standard Liege, as well as a city rivals Brussels FC. However, the derby match between Brussels FC and Anderlecht is rarely contested, as the teams spend most of the time in different divisions.
Over the years, many notable Belgium and foreign players have worn the purple and white uniforms. The most notable among them in Paul Van Himst, who has won the local title 8 times, while scoring 233 goals in 457 matches over 16 seasons for the club between 1959-1975 and adding 30 goals in 81 matches for the national team. After retiring, Van Himst managed Anderlecht and the national team, which he led to the 1994 FIFA World Cup. In November 2003, to celebrate UEFA's Jubilee, Van Himst was named the Golden Player of Belgium by the Belgian Football Association as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years.
Dautch striker Rob Rensenbrink played for Anderlecht in 262 matches between 1971–1980 and scored 143 goals. He won 2 championships for the club, 5 Belgium Cups and 2 UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup, including a pair of goals in the 1976 final against West Ham United.
François Van der Elst played 243 matches for Anderlecht between 1971–1980. He scored 82 goals, won 2 championships, 4 Cups, 2 UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup and a UEFA Super Cup.
Another notable local heros include former “Golden Child” Enzo Scifo, who recorded 119 matches for Anderlecht between 1983–1987 and 1997-2000, in which he scored 46 goals and won 4 championships and appeared in the final of the 1983-84 UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup.
Striking sensation Luc Nilis played 224 matches for Anderlecht between1986-1994 in which he scored 224 goals, won 4 championships, 3 Cups and 2 Super Cups.
Anderlecht still play its home games in the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium. The club pulled out in recent years from plans to move into a new, 60,000-seat stadium after the project has endured some political difficulties.
