About Standard de Liege
It was founded in late 19 century, it has changed its name numerous times, it looks, sometimes with envy, on Belgium’s two biggest clubs – Anderlecht and Club Brugge – but Standard Liège remains one of the top three clubs in Belgium football.
Standard Liege (full name: Royal Standard de Liege) was founded in 1898 by some college students. It would be over 50 years until the first domestic championship and more importantly, over 90 years until one of the club’s former players will cause a ruling that will forever change the world of European football around the continent. In the meantime, Standard has become one of Belgium’s big three clubs.
Overall, Standard Liege has won a total of 10 Belgium Jupiler Pro League titles, 13 Cups, 1 league Cup and 4 Super Cups. On the European front, Standard was a runner up in the 1981-82 UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup and in the 1996 UEFA Intertoto Cup. In addition, the club has participated in the Champions League on 11 occasions.
But let’s set actual football aside, because in 1995 the European Court of Justice has made a ruling that its affect is still felt today. Jean-Marc Bosman made 74 appearances for Standard between 1983-1988. From there he moved to local rivals R.F.C. de Liege. When his contract expired in 1990, he was wanted by French side Dunkerque. Liege, for their side, demanded a fee four times the amount of his contract. When the French refused to pay, Liege cut Bosman’s contract by 75%. Bosman went to court and the decision was made in 1995 – footballers are free to leave their clubs for free at the end of their contracts.
Standard Liege’s all-time leading scorer is Jean Capelle, who scored 245 goals in 285 appearances between 1929-1944. Guy Hellers has the most appearances for Standard Liège with 474 matches between 1983-2000.
Notable former players include midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who recorded 64 matches for Standard between 2004–2006 and scored 10 goals Eric Gerets played 322 times for the club between 1971–1983 and scored 27 goals Serbian striker Milan Jovanović scored 52 goals for Standard in 116 matches between 2006–2010 Goalkeeper and local hero Michel Preud'homme made 240 appearances between 1977–1986 and also managed the club on two occasions: between 2001-2002 and 2006-2008 And Axel Witsel excelled at Standard, scoring 34 goals in 148 appearances between 2006–2011.
The red and white of Standard Liege play their home matches in 28,272 seat Stade Maurice Dufrasne.
