About Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C., AKA wolves, are three times winners of English First Division, runners up of the UEFA Cup, four times winners of the FA Cup and two times winners of the Football League Cup. Their history is rich, full of achievements and wonderful players. And yet, in 2011, the club chose to select a moment - 2003 Play Off Final – and not a player or a person, as their Hall of Fame inductee.
The 2003 Play Off Final was a moment of getting promoted, a moment of re-meeting the Premier League for the first time in, a moment of joy and happiness for all Wolves fans, but it was not a trophy-moment and there were no awards. The club chose to explain that bizarre pick this way: ”Putting a moment, rather than a player, into the Hall of Fame, was a way of recognizing an occasion that will forever live in the memories of Wolves fans… The 3–0 victory not only ended a 19-year exile from the top flight but gave the city of Wolverhampton a feel-good factor not seen for many a day”.
To make a long story short, at season’s end, wolves were back in the Championship.
Wolverhampton Wanderers was founded in 1877 by the name of St. Luke’s F.C. Two years later Wolverhampton Wanderers was founded, after a merger of St. Luke’s with a cricket club. After being one of the founding clubs of the football league in 1988, Wolves moved to Molineux Stadium, which is still its home grounds. The club won its first trophy (the FA Cup) in 1893 and the First Division in 1954. Second championship followed in 1958 and 1959.
The 80’s were an extremely difficult period. After a second League Cup in 1980, The club registered 3 consecutive relegations, all the way to 4th Division during 1984-86, outside the professional level. From there, it was a hard-fought battle, all the way to that moment in Cardiff Stadium in 2003 and getting back to the Premier League after a 19-year absence.
Wolves couldn’t stay put and were relegated again, got promoted and back and forth they went. In 2013, the club was relegated to League 1, only to fight his way back up to the Premier League once again in 2017.
Steve Bull is Wolves’ all-time goal-scorer, with 250 league goals (306 goals in all competitions) scored in 474 appearances between 1986-1999. Other club greats are Derek Dougan, who scored 95 goals in 258 appearances between 1967-1975, Jimmy Mullen scored 98 goals in 445 matches between 1937-1960 and John McAlle, who made 508 appearances between 1967-1981.
Wolves still play their home matches in Molineux Stadium, which was expanded several times since opening in the 19th century and capacity today stand at 31,700 seats.
