About Nottingham Forest
At the beginning, the stories passed from generation to generation by people who actually were there, witnessed it and were left awestruck by the deeds. Then it was picked up by poets and clergymen, who sat down, putting line after line together and created poems. Extremely long poems, they were, in which they praised the heroics of the outlaw who came from Locksley. Centuries have passed and they added ballads, books, plays, movies and TV series, still centered around one name: Robin Hood.
It is 2022. When you walk around the city of Nottingham today, there are traces of Robin Hood everywhere. There are museums and pubs and a castle and field trips to the woods surrounding the city. Robin Hood is very much alive in and around the city of Nottingham.
And during September of 2021, Nottingham Forest Football Club has found its own Robin Hood. His name is Steve Cooper.
Established in 1865, Nottingham Forest is the oldest active football club. Forest won the FA Cup in 1897-98 and again in 1958-89. In between and since after, the club has bounced between the first and second divisions of the old football league for much of its existence, having little to show in way of trophies.
It all changed in 1975, as a special man, and even a more so a special character by the name of Brain Clough - devastated by a meaningless and an extremely short period in charge of Leeds United, but beaming from a huge success at bitter and hated Forest rivals Derby County – was named manager. The beginning was difficult, as the club suffered yet another relegation. It took over two years until Clough was able to reunite with longtime assistant Peter Taylor for Nottingham to take off.
Nottingham blew up all expectations by wining the first division in 1978-79, overpowering powerhouse Liverpool by 7 points. The same year, the club has added the first of 4 League Cups. Clough then went out and won 2 successive European Cups (todays Champion League) in 1978-79, 1979-80.
The team was led by defender Viv Anderson, England's goalkeeper Peter Shilton and club legend and captain Archie Gemmill.
But fortune didn't last long and soon after Nottingham went back to its old habits, dropping to the second division. 1999 was the last time. Ever since, Forest was basked outside the limelight, trying time and again to return to center stage, but to no avail.
In September 2021, after another horrendous season opening, when the club was headed straight to League One, it appointed Cooper. Not much expectations there, as the former Liverpool Academy, England U-16 and U-17 and Swansea City manager took on an enormous task.
But Cooper prevailed, somehow doing the unthinkable and leading Forest to the playoff final, where it had beaten Huddersfield Town and returned to the Premier League.
Forrest wasted little time in preparations for the 2022-23 season. The club has added, among others, Taiwo Awoniyi, who lit up the Bundesliga last season with Union Berlin, Omar Richards from Bayern Munich, goalkeeper Dean Henderson from Manchester United and Liverpool right wing Neco Williams.
